The Pet Dragon: A Story about Adventure, Friendship, and Chinese Characters

I was struck by the creative use of the Chinese characters in the drawings themselves which were very fresh and alive. A Chinese/American friend of mine also read the book and said that these characters must be rather new. She didn’t think that her father would recognize them. I think the book would be compelling for both children and adults.

This picture book is a fun way to aquaint yourself with some basic Chinese characters. The illustrations show the character with the picture on top of it. The story is cute, and the illustrations are simple, yet instructive.

My 3.5 year-old loves how the chinese characters are integrated into the illustrations. By the 3rd reading, she wanted to tell ME what the characters meant, and to my pleasant surprise, she is now able to point out a good number of the characters in other chinese books she has, in restaurant and store signs, etc.
I would give this book 5 stars if pin yin was also included, beneath the character descriptions at the bottom of the page.
Please, Mr. Niemann, keep churning out more of these chinese character books (and include the pin yin!) We love this one. The illustrations, type and book design are gorgeous–so much more aesthetically pleasing than most other kiddie language books out on the market.

I am Chinese and my daughter is mixed so I have been looking for books to teach her how to speak chinese. This book is pretty useless for this purpose – There is no pinyin so it shows you one or two Chinese characters on each page, the english meaning, but it does not show you how to pronounce it in Chinese!!!! There is a book called Gordon and Li Li and it’s awesome!

My 4 year old and I love to read this book together. It is so creative how they attach the chinese characters to the actual image. Together we’ve learned all the characters in just a few reads. Highly recommend!
